May 7, Victory Day Commemoration

We have received a blessing from Fr. Aidan to commemorate Victory Day (9 May) on Sunday 7 May.

We shall gather together after trapeza to commemorate the victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War, in which many of our great-grandparents, grandparents, and other relatives participated, and in which some of them gave their lives, along with millions of others who made the ultimate sacrifice.

For many of us, it is a very important day full of tears, sorrow, remembrance, and contemplation of the great sacrifices made. World War II was a global tragedy that should never be forgotten. We will try to explain a lot in English, as Fr. Aidan has requested.

The program will occur right after the meal after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday the 7th of May. It will be targeted mostly for children, but the older generation will have something for their heart as well.

Our children will perform songs and poems. If your child wants to recite a poem or sing a song, it’s more than welcomed. Please contact Elena Aleshina (elenvan@rambler.ru) in advance so that she can add you to the program.

Please send pictures for the memorial wall to Elena Aleshina along with some information about the person, 3 or 4 sentences: Name, Info about their service in WWII, Honors/Rewards, etc.

Please, join us!

St George’s ribbons will be distributed with Father’s blessing from the bookstore near the candles starting Sunday April 30. Please stop by and pick up one as a free gift.

Update: May 7, 2017

Last year, the theme of our celebration was to recognize all our grand parents and great grandparents who contributed to the victory over the Nazis in World War II.  This year, we tried to tell our children about the Leningrad siege and read letters that were sent by soldiers to their families during the war.  Next year, we will begin to talk about the major battles.  We want our children to know about their history and how great was the sacrifice and the victory.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences today, and joined us in commemoration and celebration.  Especially thank you to our children who did so well in their performances and participation.
